Excerpt from a letter to Vera Gertrude Anderton from her father, Harry W. Anderton
Kansas City, KS Feb.21 1928
Dearest daughter, and all the rest: I will answer your loving letter I received yesterday afternoon. We are all as well as usual and hope these few lines find you the same. Work has not picked up here yet. I still have a couple of days work, then I will have to try and find something else to do. Gertrude, you do not know how happy you made me when you promised me that you would never do a thing to make me ashamed of you. Dear, oh, how it makes my heart rejoice to know that I am to have one that is going to be like her mother. You spoke about the hymn which always came to you when tempted and quoted a part of the words but the most important part you left out.
Yield not to temptatation for yielding is sin, each victory will help you, some other to win, fight manfully onward, dark passion subdue look ever to Jesus He will carry you through.
He says he will not suffer to be tempted above that ye are able to bear, but He will with the temptation make a way of escape. So put your trust in Christ and live for him and he will shield and protect you. Well as I can't think of anything more to write I will close with lots of love to all. Your loving father H.W. Anderton

Harry MURPHY was born in Ireland and emigrated around the turn of the century. He was actually not born Murphy, but his father adopted the name when they emigrated. Sadly, no living members of the family remember what their original last name was. He married Elizabeth COWIE, and in 1917, she gave birth to Robert William MURPHY. There are now 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, with (always!) more on the way.
